Baptism Confusion

I was listening to Howard talk today at church and he kept talking about if you accept Jesus into your life then you become a child of God. I thought that by doing that you had to be baptized first. I've personally never been baptized, maybe next summer with our church. When they say to be born again... Doesn't that mean that you've gone and been baptized, declaring to the world that you believe in Christ? And until then, are you just kidding yourself that God is talking to you? I got the impression from a book I once read that until you have been baptized, God doesn't talk to you, doesn't communicate until you have been born again. So, am I wrong here, or do I speak some variation of the truth? I do intend to be baptized, it kind of sucks I have to wait a year but maybe I need to learn more things before I do.

Hi Erin,
Why do you have to wait a year before you can be baptized? Most everyone gets baptized right after they have repented and asked Jesus into thier heart. I know this is a confusing subject. If you read the book of acts, the new church baptized immediatly. But the bible does say confession is made unto salvation. God does hear you. I would find a church that would baptize me if yours will not. The new church baptized in Jesus name. Where it says to baptize in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Father and Son are titles, not names. I would ask to be baptized in the name of Jesus or at least the Father and the Son,Jesus, and the Holy Sprit. I hope i've not confused you more, but you asking questions is a good thing. keep searching the scriptures. You'll find the answers! And thank you for posting a Prayer for Julie in her guestbook. Please keep praying. No one has heard from her in the last several days. Have a Great Day Erin! Hugs<3 Joan

in my opinion.....
Once you accept Christ as your savior into your heart then you are already a new creation. The baptism comes when you feel that you are ready for it. I think Greg said something along the lines that baptism is an outward expression for all to see of your commitment to Christ. I think he said something like that at the baptism.
Just cause you haven't been baptized doesn't mean that God is not talking to you. Once you have excepted Him into your heart I think that is when it starts being powerful. He is always talking to people and sometimes they just don't realize that it is Him. Then it makes more sense once they open their hearts to Him.
Does that make any sense? That you don't need to be baptized in order to hear God or see Him. It is an outward expression of your love for Him and should be done when YOU feel you are ready.
Hope I made some sense.

Total sense. I want to be baptised, I just got confused because some said you needed a relationship with him first, when others said the minute you accept him- be baptised.

Thanks

Erin,

Baptism is done in obedience to God's desire for us as symbolic of what Jesus has done for us. Jesus was baptised for this reason, not because He needed it (He IS the Son of God, after all) but as an example of what obedience and submission means. Also note what Jesus said to the thief on the cross, that today he would be with Jesus in paradise (which is heaven). The thief didn't have a chance to be baptised in water before he died, yet I don't think Jesus is a liar.

Misty said it well.
but we should back it with a verse.

lets go to the most famous one in the book
John 3:16
Jesus said, "For GOD so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life!"

so lay your heart to rest about the urgency of baptism.
